Due to the nature of the work that they do, one big risk for healthcare workers is burnout. Burnout is when the person feels that they cannot emotionally, physically or mentally give anything else to what they do for work.
This is something that many healthcare workers, at some point in their career, need to deal with and need to try and work through.
Whilst recruitment is the initial stage of finding someone for a role, this doesn’t mean that this early stage cannot impact the chance of burnout and how it impacts the healthcare service and the staff themselves.
It increases turnover
When someone feels burnt out by the job that they do, then there is a much greater chance that they are going to feel that the only way to change this is to move on and find a new role in a new setting.
However, this is not necessarily something that is going to be true, however, they won’t know this until they make the move and find a new job.
Increased turnover is a recruitment issue for sure. When people leave a job, then a new person is going to need to be found to take on the work that they have and this means that a recruitment process is going to need to be completed. This takes time, this takes money and it takes those who have to recruit away from their own work.
It costs money
When staff are facing burnout, there is an increased chance that they are going to be absent from the work setting. This may be due to sickness, which is going to be shorter term, or it might be something longer term like they decide to move on to a new role.
Whatever happens, this situation is going to cost you money as the recruiter. You may need to find a short-term staffing replacement, or you may need something longer term, which is going to cost even more money.
What can be done to reduce burnout?
The main thing that needs to happen when it comes to reducing burnout is that every staff member feels that they are valued in their roles and that they have a high level of work-life balance. This is down to the employer to ensure happens.
However, recruiters can also help with this. Including making sure that the candidates who get the roles are going to be the right fit and are going to get the most from the work that they do.
Taking careful steps in the recruitment stage is a great way to do this. You can make sure not only that the person you are hiring is the right person for the role, but also that the role is right for them too. Making sure that this happens in the early stages is a surefire way to have a positive outcome in the recruitment search.
